Abstract

This paper first gives a brief overview of two inductive heating methods: axial flux and trnasverse flux heating, then goes on to present the results of numerical simulations of the heating process as well as measurements taken and experience gained with a pilot plant. The results show that inductive transverse flux heating is a very flexible and efficient heating process for various applications in steel mills and rolling mills. This applies particularly to thin slab casting. In this case, optimum intermediate heating of the thin slabs can be achieved even with varying temperature distribution prior to entry into the heating bed.
